Subject overview
Ideal Gases
Use the ideal gas law to calculate absolute pressure, volume, amount of substance or temperature. Follow SI conversions and calculation steps for a gas in thermodynamic equilibrium.

Key Formulas
Requires algebra and SI unit conversion. The gas is in thermodynamic equilibrium. Particles have negligible volume and no intermolecular interactions. Real gases approach this model at low density, away from condensation.
Use absolute pressure, not gauge pressure, and temperature in kelvin. All four quantities must be strictly positive. The equation describes a state; it does not specify a heating or expansion process.
Calculate
Type prefixes directly: 1.5k, 250m or 20u. Results: 3 significant figures.
Enter three quantities to calculate the remaining one.
Ideal gas in equilibrium; all quantities must be positive. Use absolute pressure and temperature in kelvin. Real-gas effects and phase changes are excluded.
